The Greatest Generation Project was established to honor the service and sacrifices of the students of Boiling High School to the nation during World War II. It is based upon cross-referencing graduate lists starting with the Class of 1930 and the South Carolina Adjutant General's list of men and women from our state that served in World War II. We are awaiting the class lists back to 1918 and will research those as well. We know that the lists are not accurate and ask your help in correcting them. Many of our students dropped out of high school and went directly into the service. We want to add those men and women to our lists as well. In fact, we recognized one of our students at the 2003 Graduation Ceremony with an honorary diploma. This is a part of history of this community that needs to be saved. In looking back at those years, the largest enrollment year that the school had, freshman through seniors, men and women, was 287. From the years 1930 to 1945, we had 103 men and women serve in the World War II era. The sons and daughters of our community made a large contribution to the war effort. Eight gave their lives. Our students served all over the world and participated in almost every major battle. We will add to this record as we obtain more information from the veterans or their families. Veterans or their descendents are asked to contact the school for an information sheet--cathy.drake@spartanburg2.k12.sc.us or 864-578-8465. |
